| What We Believe |
At Good News our purpose: To reach and transform people, by the power of the gospel, in biblical community. We are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). We organize our biblical beliefs with a list of Core Competencies. These competencies describe how we think, act and become like Jesus. Each week, we will teach from one of these competencies in every area of our ministry, including children, youth, college, and adults. TrinityWe believe there is one true God-Who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. 2 Cor. 13:14 "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." God The FatherWe believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. (Genesis 1:1,26,27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19;1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14) God The SonWe believe Jesus Christ is God the Son, co-equal with the Father. We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. We believe He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary. We believe He died on the cross to pay the full and awful penalty for our sins. We believe He rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father. We believe in the personal, visible return of our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the last judgment, and the everlasting punishment of the lost, and everlasting life for all who believe. (Ac 1:11) (Jn 1:14; Col 2:9,10; Heb 1:1-4) God The Holy SpiritWe believe the Holy Spirit is God the Spirit, co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He applies the salvation earned by Christ to us. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. We believe we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit continually (Eph. 5:18) We believe the fruit of the Spirit is the best and truest evidence of His work and filling (Gal. 5:22,23) We believe love is the ultimate fruit and goal of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 13) (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16,17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18) God’s SovereigntyWe believe that God is on His throne and controls everything that comes to pass. Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Salvation By GraceWe believe a person is saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ alone. Authority of the BibleWe believe the Bible is the Word of God and has the right to command our belief and action. We believe the Scriptures to be the inspired, inerrant, infallible, and authoritative Word of God. (Heb 2 Tim 3:16-17 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:20,21 Personal GodWe believe God is our heavenly Father and cares about every area of our lives. 1 John 3:1a “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” Identity in ChristWe believe we are significant because we are children of God. John 1:12,13 "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." ChurchWe believe the church is the Body of Christ and His primary means of accomplishing His purposes in the world today. Jesus loved the church and gave himself up for it. We love the church because Christ did. We believe the church is central to God's eternal purpose. We believe that God has entrusted the task of world evangelization to His Church and that it is important for every Christian to be involved in the visible church here on earth. Our faith has both vertical and horizontal components. A believer without a church is like a child without a family. Ephesians 4:16 “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” ManWe believe that man is made in the image of God yet scarred by sin and in need of a Savior. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” FamilyWe believe that the family is God's institution and the basic building block of human society. Genesis 2:24 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” EternityWe believe Jesus is coming again to judge the world and establish the final state of things. Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.” Single-mindednessWe focus on God and His purpose for our lives. Matthew 6:33 "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." ObedienceWe obey God because He knows what is best for us. 1 John 5:3 ”This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” WorshipWe worship God for Who He is and what He has done for us. Psalm 95:1-2 "Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song." PrayerWe pray to God because we are welcomed at His throne through Christ. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Bible StudyWe study the Bible to know God and the truth, and to become equipped for every good work. Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Biblical CommunityWe team up with other Christians to accomplish God’s purpose in our lives, the church, and the world. Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” EvangelismWe share Jesus because we love Him and want others to know Him. Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” StewardshipWe properly manage all that God has given to us, including our spiritual gifts, time, and money. 1 Timothy 6:18 "Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." LoveWe are growing in our love for Christ and for others. 1 John 4:7 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” JoyWe are learning to rejoice regardless of our circumstances. John 15:11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” PeaceWe are experiencing a growing peace with God, ourselves, and others. Philippians 4:9 “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” PatienceWe take longer and longer to overheat. Proverbs 14:29 “A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.” KindnessWe are learning to treat others the way we would like to be treated. 1 Thessalonians 5:15 “Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.” GentlenessWe are becoming like God in thought, word, and deed. Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” FaithfulnessWe are becoming faithful to God and to others. Proverbs 3:3-4 "Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man." Self ControlWe are becoming gentle in our dealings with others. Philippians 4:5 “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” Self-Control We are learning to keep ourselves under control. Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”
